Fusion, Revs Discuss Valderrama Deal

By Dave Brousseau, Staff Writer, Sun Sentinel, August 2, 1998

ORLANDO- The Fusion is discussing trading disgruntled midfielder Carlos Valderrama to the New England Revolution for forward Joe-Max Moore.

The trade appeared close Friday but was off Saturday. It could be back on anytime today.

"Anytime you can work with a talent like Valderrama, you'd be crazy as a coach not to entertain that," said New England coach Thomas Rongen, who coached Valderrama for two years in Tampa Bay.

"Right now we're talking rumors. There's nothing concrete except for the mere fact that I've heard he'd love to come play for me."

Fusion General Manager Leo Stillitano would not talk about the trade, but he didn't deny it either.

"I didn't know how these rumors get started," Stillitano said.

"The trade would be a big deal, though."

It's likely that if a trade does occur, it won't happen until after today's MLS All-Star game.

The trade makes sense for both teams.

Valderrama may have worn out his welcome with the Fusion and new coach Ivo Wortmann.

Valderrama has missed two practices las week and was fined $10,000 by the MLS. Valderrama has not played since Wortmann's arrival.

Valderrama has four assists in nine games.

Moore, a midfielder, makes his home in Miami. He played in 13 games last season for New England, scoring four goals and two assists.

Commissioner Doug Logan wouldn't confirm or deny that the trade is pending.

"Any player can be traded at any time to any place," Logan said.

"Until I get a trade sheet in front of me to sign, I don't respond to hot stove aspects of the league. Can he [Valderrama] be traded? Sure."
